Business Analysis and Requirements Engineering

Course Description

This course focuses on the evolution of requirements as they progress through the software development life cycle (SDLC). Candidates are taught how to engage the various stakeholders and solicit their requirements, both functional and non-functional. The importance of traceability of the requirement, and changes to the requirement, throughout the life of the project is explained.

We base our training on practical interactions and participation in class and home exercises to ensure that each candidate trained will be able to immediately implement concepts, techniques and principles learnt on the course.

Course Content

• Requirements Overview
  The different levels of a requirement are addressed; namely, business requirements, user requirements, and functional requirements. The reasons for poor requirements are also covered.
• Characteristics of a Good Requirement
  The main characteristics of a good requirement (complete, feasible, necessary, unambiguous, prioritised, and verifiable) are explained to the candidates. Over and above these characteristics, the importance of completeness, consistency, ability to be modified, and the traceability of requirements is addressed.
• Requirements Management
  Candidates will learn a process that identifies, prioritises and tracks the status of testable requirements. This process greatly enhances requirements management planning, design, execution, and reporting.
• Roles
  The stakeholders' responsibilities with regards to requirements, as well as the importance of stakeholder interaction, is discussed from the point of view of developers, business analysts, users, systems analysts, and testers.
• Modelling and Documenting
  The various techniques of modelling requirements are covered, namely, use cases, data flow, entity relationships, state transition, dialog maps, and class diagrams.

Course Details

Pre-requisites

Previous experience in requirements engineering is not necessary; however, general knowledge of the information technology industry is an advantage.

Course presentation and duration

The course is presented by experienced IT practitioners. The course duration is five days from 8:30 to 16:30. This includes lunch and two tea breaks daily.

Training style

The course is conducted in a classroom style. Candidates use practical tasks to consolidate theoretical concepts. Any related problems encountered in the workplace can be discussed in the course.

Course materials, certification and assessment

Comprehensive course notes are provided. There will be an examination on day 5. On successful completion of this course, a Test and Data Services Certificate is awarded. The candidate's result will be displayed on their certificate.

Training Venues

Test and Data Services presents courses at several well-established training facilities in Midrand (near Johannesburg and Pretoria), Cape Town and Durban. Training can be arranged at the client’s premises depending on adequate facilities and candidate numbers.
