Advanced Core Module
This course is a prerequisite to any of the ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Certificate (CTAL) courses presented by Test and Data Services.
Test and Data Services offers the ISTQB Advanced Core Module as a ‘bridging’ course – in which elements common to all three advanced level streams are presented in one two day course. Each of the three ISTQB Advanced streams – Test Manager, Test Analyst and Technical Test Analyst – is usually trained over five days. As the candidate only needs to complete the Advanced Core Module once, a potential fifteen days training to obtain the full ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level qualification is reduced to eleven; saving the candidate four days.

This course is relevant to candidates who, having gained the Foundation Level Certificate in Software Testing, wish to complete the ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Certificate (CTAL). Test managers, test team leaders, testers, developers, development managers, business analysts and any would also benefit from this course.

Course Content
The content of this course expands on the material covered in the Foundation Level Certificate course.
- Basic Aspects of Software Testing
Discusses how software testing fits into software lifecycles, and reviews the different lifecycle models and systems that need to be tested.
- Testing Process
Briefly covers the generic testing process and the activities necessary to each testing phase.
- Risk Based Testing
Explains the different types of risk, stages of the risk management process, the importance of stakeholder involvement, and how a risk based test strategy can influence testing.
- Reviews
Discusses the principles of reviews, the different review types and how reviews may be introduced into an organisation.
- Incident Management
Discusses when defects can be detected and the application of the incidents lifecycle at each testing level. Examples of the type of metrics one can discover are supplied, as well as how these can be used in process improvement.
- Test Tools and Automation
Covers test tool concepts including cost-benefit analysis and strategies for tool deployment. Test tool classifications provide greater clarity on common tool types such as test management and test execution tools.
- People Skills
Methods of team communication and the necessity for diplomatic, objective communication of relevant information to the right parties are discussed.
Course Details
- Prerequisites
Those wishing to take the ISTQB Advanced Level Certificate exams must hold the Foundation Level Certificate in Software Testing. There are certain work experience prerequisites, please consult the www.sastqb.org.za site for more detailed information.
- Course presentation and duration
The course is presented by an experienced software testing practitioner. The course duration is two days. It runs from 8:00 to 17:30. This includes a lunch and two tea breaks daily.
- Training style
The course is conducted in a classroom style. Candidates use practical tasks to layer theoretical concepts.
- Comprehensive and accredited course materials, certification and assessment
Comprehensive course notes are provided. During the course several practical worksheets will be issued. These will assist candidates in their preparation for the ISTQB Certified Tester Advanced Level Certificate (CTAL) examinations. As this is not an assessed course, a certificate of completion will be issued. Course dates can be found on www.testdata.co.za.
- Training Venues
Test and Data Services presents courses at several well-established training facilities in Midrand
(near Johannesburg and Pretoria), Cape Town and Durban. Training can be arranged at the client’s premises depending on adequate facilities and candidate numbers. Training courses can also be provided internationally.
