Software Testing Overview for Managers

Course Description

This course is targeted, primarily, at managers and other parties who interact with software testing teams. It explains many of the fundamental concepts behind software testing.

Through a better understanding of the testers operating methods, as well as their needs and frustrations, people interacting with the software testing team will achieve improved and more predictable results.

Intended Audience

The course is of interest to people who typically interact with software testers at a management level. For example, this would include development managers, business managers and business analysts.

Course Content

• Inspections
  Inspections are one of the most powerful techniques in software testing, yet they are seldom used since people often underestimate their cost-saving effect.
  The course gives managers an insight into:
  • the important role that other parties (such as managers) play in the inspections process,
  • the role of inspections in the software development process,
  • when inspections should be implemented, and
  • what results can be expected.
• Requirements management
  Candidates learn how testers identify, prioritise, and track the status of testable requirements. These skills greatly enhance test planning, design, execution and reporting.
• Test planning
  Understanding how test planning is done gives candidates an insight into the actual needs of the testing team, and why those needs exist. Candidates are shown what to expect from test plans, and how to interpret them. International formats in test plans, as well as the roles of scheduling, budgeting and maintaining quality in test planning, are discussed.
• Testing techniques
  An overview of the various software testing techniques used by testers is presented. Since these techniques are integral to the testing process it is useful for people who interact with testers to be familiar with them.
• Defect management
  The various components of the defect management process are discussed. This enables candidates to understand how factors both inside and outside the testing team impact on the success of the testing initiative. They will discover how to improve production processes so that defects are handled effectively.
• Testing types
  This section looks at different testing types and at what stage in the software development life cycle they should be implemented. It also addresses issues such as expected results and the advantages of each testing type.

Course Details

Prerequisites

Previous experience in software testing is not necessary; however, general knowledge of the information technology industry is an advantage.

Course presentation and duration

The course is presented by an experienced software testing practitioner. The course duration is one day. It runs from 8:00 to 16:30. This includes a lunch and two tea breaks.

Training style

The course is conducted in a classroom style. Candidates use practical tasks to consolidate theoretical concepts. Any testing-related problems encountered in the workplace can be discussed in the course.

Course materials and certification

Comprehensive course notes are provided. On completion of this course, the Test and Data Services Software Testing Overview for Managers certificate is awarded.
